Yellow Peril Gallery is pleased to present FLUSHING THE SYSTEM, a solo exhibition of new mixed media abstract works on canvas by Providence-based artist S.W. Dinge, curated by Robert P. Stack.

FLUSHING THE SYSTEM has an active visual language that encourages the viewer to personally connect with the work as they enter the space and are drawn from one painting to the next.  By using mixed media elements (acrylic, graphite, crayon, oil pastel, conte crayon, china marker, colored pencil and wax) and applying them to canvas, Dinge blurs the line between drawing and painting with each stroke.

In general, I try not to prescribe to the notion of a strict concept when it come to abstract works,” says Dinge, who originally hails from the Adirondacks in Upstate New York and relocated to Providence over a decade ago.  “The idea that there could be multiple angles of interpretation intrigues me. All I can do as the artist is offer up my angle.”

For Dinge, this angle includes vast areas of calm and relative quiet interrupted by brief bursts of vigorous, sometimes aggressive creative energy.  “As I worked on these pieces, I began to see them as a representation of the creative process itself,” he shares, adding, “I can envision the plane of the canvas as time and space.”

The opening reception for FLUSHING THE SYSTEM is on Thursday, May 16 from 5PM – 9PM during Gallery Night Providence.  The exhibition will be on display until Sunday, June 16, 2013.
