Press Release: Rebecca A. Kandel → BORDERLINE

REBECCA A. KANDEL | Borderline

PROVIDENCE, RI – Yellow Peril Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of the fence that divides the United States and Mexico as seen through the eyes of those who come into contact with it on a daily basis, featuring the photography of Rebecca A. Kandel.

BORDERLINE introduces viewers to a myriad of characters whose lives are also affected by the border between Mexico and the United States. Kandel has traveled from the westernmost side of the border — where the fence literally runs off into the ocean into the middle of the country, where it at times simply disappears — interviewing and photographing those who represent all sides of the immigration debate.

From Border Patrol agents, to “coyotes,” to human rights workers, to vigilantes determined to take matters into their own hands, each person speaks passionately about his point of view on the subject.

By providing limited editorial commentary and allowing the subjects to speak for themselves in her photos, Kandel hopes to open a conversation and show just how similar we all are in the hot button immigration debate.

“Each person wants a better life for himself and his family,” she notes, adding, “we just differ in how to achieve it.”

BORDERLINE strives to leave one walking away feeling just slightly more open to another’s perspective. The exhibition will run from Tuesday, 15 November to Thursday, 15 December, 2011. Opening night reception will be on Thursday, 17 November, from 5PM – 9PM during Gallery Night in Providence.
