Olneyville Housing Corporation, The Armory Revival Company and Yellow Peril Gallery are pleased to present “Community in Focus: Photographs and Stories of Olneyville” at The Plant #108 to celebrate 25 years of living, working in and developing one of Providence’s most vital and historic neighborhoods. The opening reception is Thursday, April 17 from 5PM – 9PM during Gallery Night Providence.

“Community in Focus: Photographs and Stories of Olneyville” is an oral history and photo exhibit showcasing the diverse culture and history of the Olneyville community. Undertaken as part of Olneyville Housing’s 25th Anniversary Celebration, the exhibit celebrates life in Olneyville by pairing 25 striking portraits of Olneyville residents, artists, merchants and other neighborhood luminaries with their recorded reminiscences. This unique photographic and oral history exploration of the neighborhood goes beyond traditional historic resources such as archives, newspaper clippings, old maps and photos to more intimately understand community history. The exhibit engages the community in a revisiting of memory, a creation of art, and a celebration of neighborhood pride.

“Yellow Peril Gallery is proud to be a part of the dynamic Olneyville community,” said Director Vanphouthon Souvannasane.  “Engaging with the local population about our neighborhood’s impact on art and culture is definitely a mutually-beneficial source of civic pride for everyone.  We are honored to partner with Olneyville Housing and Armory Revival to host this important exhibit here at The Plant.”

The opening reception for “Community in Focus: Photographs and Stories of Olneyville” is Thursday, April 17, from 5PM – 9PM during Gallery Night Providence.  The exhibition will be on display from Thursday, April 3 until Sunday, April 27, 2014.
